Golf Ryder Cup 2022
Rome is all set to be the location of the prestigious international golf competition in 2022. This will be the first time that Italy has been chosen to host the event. The Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, 17 km from the centre of Rome, will follow in France's footsteps who will host the 2018 event. This 44th edition of the match between Europe and the United States will be staged in the autumn of 2022.
What is the Ryder Cup? It's one of the greatest sporting events named after its founder Samuel Ryder and takes place every two years, where 24 of the best players from Europe and the United States go head-to-head in 5 match play sessions over 3 days. So far the USA has had most wins.
Apart from Marco Simone there are 28 other golf clubs, resorts and driving ranges in the Lazio region.
It's too early to purchase tickets yet but we've included a link to the official Italian golf federation, where you can find all the information plus a list of the golf courses in Italy.
NORBA TAKES TOP SPOT!
Not too surprising - it's easy to reach, plenty of parking and not that far from the A1 Roma-Napoli motorway: the "Autostrada del Sole" approx 90mins from Rome.
The leaping-off point is at Norba an ancient Roman site - once a military fort - and very close by is the "modern" medieval village of Norma where you can go eat and relax between thermals.
Rather more tame than Norba or San Donato, but no less beautful, is Lake Albano - sometimes also called Lake Castel Gandolfo after the most important village situated around the edge, which is also the Summer residence of the Pope. This ex-volcano crater has higher ridges where you see the paragliders and the Pope's residence is across the lake in the lower part. We don't know where the jumping off point is for around here but we will find out and update.
Next favourite of ours is SAN DONATO - it has such stunning landscapes and the village is oh so pretty! it could almost be a stage-set. We took the route from the AI then took the 'Superstrada Ferentino-Sora" (Sora is a great town for shopping...take a big wallet!! or drive quickly through without stopping), then up, up and up some more into the mountains. At one point we found ourselves on route 666 which was freaky as there were many motorbikes hurtling past us like bats out of hell.
If you are a paragliding nut this website is fairly informative and if we can assist you with your dream flying holiday in Lazio, or help you with any of the following, please get in touch: accommodation, airport transfers or anything else not mentioned.
