We had a wonderful day exploring the island of Ventotene (and then on to Ponza) and would recommend a trip here to anyone with a love of the sea, sailing, snorkeling or fishing, but you need a good pair of "sea-legs", which I don't have, on case the sea gets choppy (which it did). If money is no object you can go by helicopter from the mainland to Ponza but I don't know if there's a landing pad on Ventotene.
We found the town simple but charming and full of history - especially seeing the Ancient Roman Port still in excellent condition considering its age. There is a small selection of shops offering quality gift items, plus at least one mini supermarket. The main square was bustling with Italian families and tourists, making for a pleasant lively atmosphere.
Best time to go for a calm sea? Well, we went in July and got caught in a tornado so it's anyone's guess. Summer season on the islands tends to go from May to September.
