We combine two of our favourite activities on this tour - visiting ancient ruins and relaxing in hot springs, away from it all 'off the beaten path' plus stunning panoramas throughout the day.
"One of the most abandoned, wildest parts of Italy." D. H. Lawrence (b.1885 - d.1930) referring to northern Lazio and the Maremma - including Vulci - although things have changed a little since then.
This day trip combines several aspects of Etruscan life, starting with a tour of Tuscania before moving on to the impressive archaeological park at Vulci and finally ending with a favourite Etruscan pastime at a natural hot spring set in secluded countryside.
Tuscania - famous for its annual lavender festival, its many medieval towers and (according to one legend) being founded by Ascanius, son of Aeneas - where you will take an enjoyable stroll around part of the historical perimeter walls. Time permitting, we may be able to visit the churches of St. Peter and Saint Mary Major - both have stunning architecture, frescoes, ornate Cosmati mosaics and decorative stonemasonry. At a short distance away we arrive at the archaeological park, which is vast so we would focus our visit on the most significant parts as well as the museum.
Lunch could be at the spa or in a local countryside bistro.
The natural hot spring spa where you will have the rest of the afternoon to soak up the mineral-rich waters, releasing any tensions you may have as you float and swim in the various healing pools. The complex (recognised by the Italian Ministry of Health) has several pools each at different temperatures )ranging from 23-45°c, so, for example in hotter weather we tend to stay in the refreshing cooler pools, whereas in autumn/winter we spend longer in the warmer pools.
If you would like to visit Tuscania during the week of the Lavender Festival you'll need to book towards the end of May (2020). If you would like to include a sunset stroll among Lavender Fields, then aim to book for the end of June/beg. July (2020). We will hopefully know the precise dates around the beginning of next year.
Based on departure / return to Rome this tour requires 10 hours.
