The Teverina Valley right on the Lazio-Umbria border is home to the Grechetto grape famously used to produce the well-know Orvieto white wine.
Enjoy striking panoramas and sleepy villages hidden deep in the Lazio countryside.
This excursion begins with an energetic drive up the Rome-Florence motorway, cutting through the Lazio-Umbria border. We will have a short refreshment break, after which you can sit back and enjoy this fascinating upper corner of Lazio and the Teverina wine trail.
Your first visit will be a private guided tour of an impressive underground complex dedicated to wine and the wine-making culture of this territory. One of a handful of wine museums in Italy but with the unusual feature of being housed on several underground floors descending deeper and deeper into the rock. At the end of the tour you will have a tasting of wines of the Teverina terroir accompanied by local typical products such as Porchetta (cured ham), Salumi (various other types of cured ham), cheeses and preserves. This once fully functioning winery houses some unique pieces.
For lunch we have chosen a very special winery - a producer of the best Grechetto in Italy. This wine-maker produces organic wines using primarily the Grechetto grape variety, which is the grape used in the famous Orvieto white wine. You will have a guided tour of their amazing underground Medieval cellars followed by a delicious 3-course gourmet buffet lunch of local organic produce, accompanied by a selection of wines. By mid-afternoon, once you have finished your leisurely lunch and are ready to conclude your day we return to Rome.
